*Weekday observance is for employees who would not otherwise work the weekend date. Weekend workers may observe the actual date instead. There is one entitlement for each holiday, not both dates.

The date depends on the work pattern.

Waitangi Day, Anzac Day, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and the New Year holidays can move to a Monday or Tuesday when they fall on a weekend that an employee would not otherwise work. If the actual weekend date is an otherwise working day, the holiday generally applies on that date.

Check the employee’s actual work pattern rather than using the weekday calendar for everyone. A public holiday is not counted twice.

Working on a public holiday?

Employees who work on their public holiday must receive at least time and a half for the hours worked. If it is also an otherwise working day, they are generally entitled to an alternative holiday.

If they do not work and it is an otherwise working day, they are generally entitled to a paid day off. Contract terms may provide more than the minimum.

A local day, with local details.

Regional anniversaries follow historical provincial boundaries and local custom. Confirm the date with the relevant council and your employment agreement. Otago has no single easily determined local observance date; check the agreed arrangement or established practice.

The calendar download uses weekday observance dates for national holidays and the published regional date you select. Check your roster before using it for payroll.
